Assessment of Defects in Butt-welded W plates for nuclear fusion applications.

Abstract: This experiment will provide what the authors believe will be the first set of neutron tomography on a 6 mm crack free tungsten weld. The experiment will greatly assist in further understanding how the microstructure of the tungsten plate changes due to welding and if there are any microstructural cracks. This work has the potential to influence decisions relating to the viability of tungsten as a candidate material for plasma-facing components in fusion reactors, and to pave the way for the manufacture of novel components for STEP.
